Run 8 v3 includes both the UP and BNSF Mojave Subs (220 miles combined), BNSF Barstow yard, UP Yermo yard, and the BNSF Needles Sub (168 miles). All of these routes have been merged and updated with additional track and new scenery. That's a world over 400 miles long (with yards) which includes two freight crew districts and a long pool district!

The UP/BNSF Mojave Sub routes combined are roughly 220 miles long and includes the world famous "Tehachapi Pass Loop". Ruling grades over the pass roughly range between 2.4 and 2.8 percent. The steep mountainous grades, and countless mountain curves over the Tehachapi Mountain range and the high speed running across the Mojave desert into Barstow present quite a challenge to man and machine, and the route is still considered to be one of the most challenging for railroad crews in North America.

The Southern Pacific railroad originally built the line over the Tehachapi Mountains back in the late 1800s in order to gain access into Los Angeles and the greater southern california area. The mainline makes a climb of nearly 4,000 feet in elevation between Bakersfield which is at 600 feet, and Summit Switch located east of the small town of Tehachapi which is at 4,600 feet. The line then descends down the eastern side of the Tehachapi Mountain range, and into the small high desert community of Mojave.

Our version of this route was developed to represent a more modern era of the line, and includes operations of the Union Pacific, Southern Pacific (SP merged with the UP in the 90s), AND BNSF.

Both BNSF and UP yards in Bakersfield are included as well as the large BNSF classification yard in Barstow which has a cool working hump operation, and the UP yard in Yermo which has a cool transload facility and is located just north of Dagget.

There is also helper service over this route that runs on both sides of the Tehachapi pass, from Mojave to Summit Switch at Tehachapi on northward trains, and Edison to Summit Switch on southward trains. Also, the helpers are usually cut in mid train or put on the rear of the train so they can shove. Its also interesting to note that nowadays they will leave locomotives on the rear of a train in order to assist with dynamic braking while descending the hill. These units are called DPUs and Run8 simulates this operation very well.

The route also features working defect detectors, and another cool operation that Run8 simulates very well is the humping and kicking of railcars. And Run8's version of Barstow includes the large classification bowl and hump that is fully functional via Run8's hump controller menu (Left Ctrl+F6) which lets you assign destination symbols to the various tracks which can then be matched to the destination tags of the various railcars that are being humped.

The hump in v3 can now be worked by AI!

With a little practice you can be humping railcars like a pro and it is fun to watch all the different railcars rolling down into the bowl. And once a track fills up you can then go down to the other end of the yard and run a trim job and start putting new trains together! It is very cool!
